The hair was a necessary inclusion in this image, although it isn’t necessary enough to be drawn in detail. The background is composed of sliced-up headlines from tabloid newspapers. Materials were very thin on the ground at this time, so I was always looking for relevant media to use.
Nick Cave is an author and poet as well as a musician, so print is a valid inclusion. The purpose of writing is to communicate, so by disassembling the text, I am removing it’s power to inform and reducing it to decoration. This is apt when you think about the nonsense which is passed off as news in the tabloid press.
